Former No . 2 track was abolished in June 1988, along with the Up and Down end plunger locked points leading into No . 2 track.

Operated by hand or from a ground frame, these facilities made use of track circuit shunts and time locked points to ensure that any approaching train would be brought to a standstill before encountering the obstruction.

In November 1986, the staff locked points at the Down end of the station were abolished, and replaced with an annett lock, with a staff / annett key exchange apparatus provided, to prevent unnecessary operation of the level crossing signals during operation.

In late 1987, a number of changes occurred at Birchip, including the No . 2 track booked out of service, and the abolition of a number of plunger locked points and signals, with a new Up signal provided, located at the Down end of the Wycheproof Road level crossing.
